The size of a newborns stomach

Hey mama, it doesn't take much to fill up your newborn baby. At birth your baby’s stomach isn't much bigger than a cherry (that will take literally 1-2 teaspoons of milk to fill up). However, every day they are growing bigger and bigger, it feels hard to keep up with how much milk is normal for them to drink, right?

Here are 5 foods you can remember when thinking about the size of your baby’s stomach and how fast it will grow over the months:

  • Day 1 : Cherry
  • Day 3 : Walnut
  • Two Weeks : Apricot
  • One Month : Egg
  • 3 Months : Orange

How can I tell if my baby is hungry?

Baby’s are pretty good at telling us when they are hungry through crying! But there are other signs that may help you to understand they are hungry such as; closed firsts, hands moving to mouth, head turning toward breast, opening and closing their mouth.

How can I tell if my baby is full?

Every baby is completely different, but the tell-tale signs that your little one is full are easy to spot; a closed mouth (refusing a feed), turning their head away from your breast or baby bottle and open hands (closed fists = hungry).

How do I know if I overfed my baby?

Even though your baby’s stomach is small, it doesn't mean they can't physically drink more milk than needed. Signs they drank a little too much include; frequent spit up, vomiting after feeds, fussiness and irritability after feeds.

Remember, every baby is different, so it's essential to pay attention to your baby's cues and seek professional medical help if you have any concerns over feeding. You know your baby better than anyone and what works for you.
