Talk baby to me

Hey mama, do you ever just wish you understood what your baby was trying to say?

When your baby is unhappy, they let you know about it, usually with a big cry! But before they cry they usually give you a heads up in the form of the sounds.

Here's a 5 baby sounds that actually mean different things:

  • Neh - I'm hungry (may clench fists)
  • Owh - I’m sleepy
  • Heh - I’m uncomfortable (hot, cold wet)
  • Eairh - I need to pump / poo (may lift legs)
  • Eh - I need to burp

Why is it helpful to listen out for these sounds?

If your baby can tell you what they need it means you can tend to their needs quicker, reduce their crying and if it's the middle of the night… ultimately get back to sleep faster!

Is this method proven?

This is the Dunstan baby language method, noting that babies have a universal language no matter which language they speak.

It was created by Priscilla Dunstan, an opera singer. She is not a speech therapist or expert on babies, but she used her skills as a vocalist to carry out research on babies around the world for 8 years and found these 5 sounds meant the same thing to most babies in the majority of cases.

Ultimately, anything you can do to help understand your baby's needs to care for them is what every mama strives for. So listen carefully to your baby next time, we hope this tip helps!

Remember, every baby is different, so it's essential to pay attention to your baby's cues and adjust your care for them accordingly. You know your baby better than anyone and what works for you.
