toddler in food catching silicone bib, weaning and eating solids

Is my baby ready for food?

Hey mama, you’ve done the sleepless nights, you are a pro at burping now.. but it's all about to change again, welcome to weaning!

Here are 5 signs to tell if your baby is ready for food & solids:

  • No tongue pushing
  • Interested in what your eating
  • Reaching for objects / putting them in their mouth
  • Sitting upright with minimum support
  • Head and neck control

What is tongue pushing?

This is when your baby doesn't want something in their mouth, they will either close their mouth or use their tongue to push out / reject the food. They are not ready for solids if this is something they are still doing.

Should I let my baby taste my food?

Please ensure you give your baby age appropriate food, however it's a good sign they are ready for solids if they are reaching for / looking at / interested in your food.

Is hand eye coordination important?

Absolutely, if your baby can now reach for objects and bring them to their mouths this shows strong hand eye coordination which supports weaning.

How long should my baby be able to sit by themselves?

It's important that your baby can sit for at least 15 minutes in a high chair without slouching over to be ready for food.

Why is head and neck control important before starting solids?

It's important that your baby can control their head and neck so that they are able to sit up right and swallow food without slouching / blocking the food from going down their throat.

There is no right or wrong age to start solids, always check with your Dr on the age recommendations and look out for all 5 of the above signs prior to beginning.

Remember, every baby is different, so it's essential to pay attention to your baby's signs and seek professional medical help if you have any concerns. You know your baby better than anyone and what works for you.
